Kyle

His life was filled with doctor appointments, surgeries, and fear of the unknown

Kyle was a happy 13 year old who had just finished a summer of baseball and happened to be at football practice when the call came that Kyle had cancer. He had a mole removed a few days earlier that seemed fine, but the biopsy revealed it as a level four malignant melanoma. Melanoma is a deadly kind of skin cancer. His life was filled with doctor appointments, surgeries, and fear of the unknown. Melanoma in children was a rarity in the US in 1993. He began a three month treatment of interferon injections. One year later, Dr. Greenfield found a swollen lymph node during a routine examination and the news was not good. The cancer had spread. Following more surgery, Kyle endured a six month treatment of high doses of interferon. All during this time he kept up with school and continued with his love of playing baseball.

Fourteen years have passed since the original diagnosis.  Kyle is working as a commercial real estate appraiser and lives in Castle Rock with his wife, Shannon, and their daughter, Adelyn.  Thanks to the wonderful doctors at Children’s Hospital Colorado, Kyle has had no sign of cancer since he finished his treatment in the spring of 1995.
