Abby was a trooper throughout her treatment

Abby, age 9, was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma on June 29, 2005.  The tumor was located on her spine and had pressed on her spinal cord so severely that Abby was paralyzed from the waist down.  After surgery to remove the tumor, Abby began a long year that included 14 rounds of chemo and 26 days of radiation, not to mention countless physical therapy sessions to help her regain the use of her legs. Shortly following her second round of chemo, she began to move her legs and has progressed to the point where today she is walking again! She finished her “hideous, horrible chemo” (her words) in May 2006 and is cancer free.  Her doctors at the Children’s Hospital will continue to monitor her very closely over the next five years in hopes that her cancer does not return.  Abby was a trooper throughout her treatment.  Though she hit some rough spots, she remained the happy, funny and carefree girl she always was! She faced each treatment head on and only once asked “why me?”   Her grandmother said one day “Abby shows the rest of us how to do this.” She is a very brave kid.

We feel lucky that we were treated at The Children’s Hospital.  Not only did Abby receive the best medical care available, she also was surrounded by a team of people who genuinely loved her and fought for her recovery.  The staff at Children’s cared for our entire family, and we will be forever grateful to them for making a very scary and dreadful situation a bit easier through their compassion, understanding and dedication.
