In 1970, Gifford  Ewing started his professional career as a photo journalist in Altus, Oklahoma. After moving to Colorado in 1972 he opened Ewing photography in Denver. He enjoys the more traditional photographic methods in his work and says that these methods serve the purity and natural beauty of the landscape. He captures most of his images in black and white with a 5x7 Deardorff wooden field camera using the zone system for exposure, and develops and prints all images using archival silver gelatin paper, finishing them in selenium to bring out the richness and increase their arhival qualities.
